6 Important Things you Need to Know About Hydration Bladders

Hydration bladders are designed for hikers and backpackers. They are easy to carry and use, and will keep you hydrated during your outdoor adventure.

However, there are some essential things you need to consider when choosing the right hydration bladder, including weight, capacity, size, quality, bite valve switch, and features.

Weight

The weight of the bladder is the first thing to look up for if you aim to pack light. For example, some 2 litre bladders weigh 10 ounces (283 grams), while some 3 litre bladders weigh only 6 ounces, so you do the math.

Don’t jump for the cheapest option, but think practical and see what you can benefit from the most in the matter of hydration.

Capacity

Fluid capacity is another important thing when buying a hydration bladder. Unless you are always going for short hikes with a small backpack that can only fit a 2 litre bladder, I suggest to spend a few bucks more and get a 3 litre bladder that you can fill to your needs.

By saying this, you should also make sure you purchase a backpack that can fit the 3 litre bladder, and if you don’t need that much water, fill it up less.

Size

Which size of hydration bladder to get is a common dilemma among hikers and backpackers. The answer is simple, choose according to the size of your pack and the amount of water you predict you’ll need to drink.

For example, small day backpacks can fit max 2 litre bladders, while large day packs and regular backpacks can fit a 3 litre one. When a 3 litre bladder is not completely full, it is flexible, and it can fit smaller packs. So, there you go, the decision is made, the 3 litre bladder is your best bet for most hiking trips.

Quality

Spending extra money on a top-quality hydration bladder can save the day when it comes to avoiding leaks. Imagine a perfect hiking trip with a leaking bladder and destroyed equipment such as your new camera?!

To avoid this scenario, go for good quality equipment, and buy yourself a reputable hydration system on the market, you won’t regret it. Plus, the top-quality hydration bladders last for years, even after heavy use.

Bite Valve Switch

Hydration bladders have tubes that lead the water to the bite valve that releases it in your mouth. Make sure your bite valve has a switch that will prevent the water from dripping when you’re not using it. Some valves twist to open and close, and these are not the best choice if you’re hiking on challenging terrain, and for a long period. It’s better to be safe than sorry when your water drips out.

Features

If you are an all-weather type of hiker, then you need to get cold-weather add-ons like insulated sip tubes and bite valve covers. These extra gadgets will prevent water from freezing and make it more comfortable to use.

Wide-mouth opening is practical because you can fit a hand in and clean the hydration bladder without buying a cleaning set.
